Chapter 6: Funding

Identifying funding sources:

  1. Local Council Funding Forums: Research local councils to identify funding forums and grants available for community interest companies (CICs). Many local councils have community foundations that offer grants to support local initiatives. Check your local council’s website for information on available funding opportunities and application processes.
  2. Fishing Organisations: Look at other fishing organisations to see who funds their work. Many organizations supporting sustainable fishing and community-led initiatives receive funding from various sources. Contact these organizations through their websites to inquire about potential funding opportunities and partnerships.
  3. Private Funding: Use web search engines to search for private funding opportunities. Many private foundations and companies offer grants to support community interest companies. Examples include the National Lottery Community Fund, Arts Council England, and the Greggs Foundation. These organizations provide grants for various projects, including those focused on community development and sustainability.
  4. Government and International Grants: Explore government and international grants aimed at promoting sustainable fisheries and community development. Organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Bank frequently offer funding for projects that align with their goals of promoting sustainable development.
  5. Innovative Financing Mechanisms: Consider innovative financing mechanisms such as social impact bonds or crowdfunding platforms. These alternatives can provide access to capital while engaging a broader audience in the mission of sustainable fishing and community development.
