Education Outreach Programme

The Lyme Bay Fisherman’s Community Interest Company’s (LBF) pioneering work in Lyme Bay on the UK’s Jurassic coast has been hailed a ‘world first’ because fishermen are taking the lead in managing and sustaining their fishery.

This is providing long-term benefits not only to marine life but also to fishermen and local communities. To promote the initiative’s success and in response to demand, an Education Outreach Programme has been designed by the Fishermen of Lyme Bay, and one year’s worth of funding to promote the LBF in schools and venues across Devon and Dorset has been received for the 2023/24 academic year.

This programme is currently built around fishermen delivering presentations to schools so that school children are educated and delighted by demonstrations of different fishing methods and learning about the life cycles of the different species of fish and shellfish that live in Lyme Bay.

Watch this space, as we are currently in the design stage, working to develop the next phase of our programme for 2024/2025. There will be additional modules developed, to include conservation and sustainability, topics close to the hearts of the inshore fleet. We look to add more community-focused modules, developed specifically for the communities that surround Lyme Bay, with emphasis on the socio-economic impacts of the fishing fleets and the coastal communities that protect and rely on them.

The need for marine education

Communicating the achievements of the LBF to a wider public will increase understanding of the concept of sustainable fishing through responsible fishery management. Using fishermen as Fisheries Education Outreach ambassadors provides a real connection for students and the fishermen themselves take pride in the scheme ensuring its continuation.

Importantly it allows the marine environment of Lyme Bay and its heritage to be communicated by those who depend on it for their livelihoods. Students gain a deep understanding of the socio-economic value of Lyme Bay’s marine heritage safeguarding the small-scale inshore fisheries and promoting environmentally sustainable practices.

our education Outreach Programme

We are now offering FREE visits to primary and secondary schools to enhance curriculum learning on the following topics:

  • Find out what a fisherman is, what they must wear to work, what methods they use to catch fish and shellfish.
  • Discover the abundant species of fish and shellfish that thrive in Lyme Bay.
  • Explore sustainable methods of fishing.

Sessions last one hour and are suitable for years 4-6 (Key stage 2). Our Fisherman ambassador will bring to the presentation the following:

  • A short PowerPoint presentation
  • Fish ID cards with interesting “fishy facts”
  • Pots, Nets, and measuring device for shellfish
  • Education materials to leave with teachers for post visit activities

Interested in Booking A Visit

Simply let us know the class size and class year when making the booking. All sessions are delivered by professional and trained staff who are local Lyme Bay fishermen (DBS approved).

If you are interested in booking a visit, please register an interest by filling out the Register Interest Form or contact us on info@lbfcic.com.

Anyone who has seen a presentation, all we ask is that you take a couple of minutes to fill in an Online Feedback Form following your visit as we rely on this information to support future funding for the programme.

Special thanks to the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FaSS) and the Blue Marine Foundation, for funding this amazing initiative.
